Utter shambles.
These guys seem awfully unorganized. Why she was putting her breathing apparatus on, outside of the truck is beyond me. They mount in the seat they ride in! And why are there people walking around in civilian clothes helping? There are plenty of turnouts around!
supply line established and charged before water on the fire. What is that about? At the end of the day, fire is out, no one got hurt. Looks like a great city to live and serve in though. beautiful town.
Thanks!
This might be a long shot but: the guy in jeans, teeshirt, white BB cap and a fire radio, in the smoke, telling guys how to set up a hose line, bet he's a senior company officer. If I ever pulled up and saw that, Hey, BB cap guy, go stand on the sidewalk across the street, I'll deal with you later.
Hehe ... How bout if hypothetically he's the boss boss? More senior than the senior company officer ...
Why weren't my beautiful boys not wearing face masks/oxygen? No telling what's in that smoke. Still, wonderful job and thank you guys for being out there.
Thanks!
Why does it take ages to put water on the fire? Don't they have water on board of those vehicles?
in the Uk , our fire depts vehicles all carry water, they would have applied water to that fire within 5 minutes of arrival, and not faff about messing around with hoses, while the building burns down. There could have been person inside that building? US fire depts need to get vehicles with water on board.
@@martinedwards7360 We also have water onboard in the Netherlands. Normally 2 firefighters will start putting water on the fire as soon as possible whilst 2 others prepare the hoses and fire hydrants to take water in if necessary.
This unit has 500 gallons of water in an onboard tank. Uncertain if they used any of it on the fire or waited for hydrant water.
@@joop1991 Most American fire pumping apparatus have between 500 and 1000 gallons in their tanks. My agency have 750 each. The fireground tactics are up to their agencies policies and commanders. We would pull hose and hit the fire immediately and use the water we have to try to knock it down....if we empty the tank before we can establish a water supply, so be it. We would expect to at least be able to knock it down enough to be safe to make an entry. But each agency, their training and capabilities are different.
Making a swimming pool in the basement. Hope no people in the residential apts.
There's no basement, and no apartments above which was just used for storage on the 2nd division, 3rd. was empty.
1”3/4 line up the stairs to the 2nd floor as soon as the first floor knocked down a bit?
That line came in from the rear, and one to the 3rd division too.
5 firefighters trying to stretch out a supply line. You need the engineer to get the pump going. Then two packed up firefighters to pull the attack line and start firefighting and let the other guy handle supply line. When I was a fire fighter in a rural volunteer department we grabbed the line off the truck and let the engineer and second due truck to supply and we put water on the fire. Sometimes we ran out of water before a tanker could get on scene but at least we had good knock downs. We rarely called for second alarms unless we needed water for big fires but this we wouldn’t have called a second alarm. We maybe would’ve called for another department to bring a pumper and tanker but that was it. Now that they went political and paid they call second alarms for fires we fought with the crews we had which was 2 stations but we had good turnouts too. And saved a lot of homes too. These firefighters must’ve been shamokin some good weed before the alarm
You had me right up to the point where you say they must've been shamokin some good weed.
These must be volunteers?
Surely because a paid department would NEVER perform like this department who receives NOTHING in return for their service. I have seen paid departments in other cities have bad days like this, so it can happen to ANYONE.
@@FDNY8231 Agree, especially some East Coast departments. Pretty dysfunctional.
A few learning points for the responding department in this video.
Never too old or serving too long to learn something and from our mistakes.
These companies need to drill more.
Can't argue with that ...
So what do they do the building after that. Must be a heck of a demo sandwiched between two other buildings. Can't imagine it's salvageable.
Since the investigation into the fire is ongoing the building is just secured and boarded up with plywood, etc so no access is allowed till they determine what will be done with it. They could demolish the building without too much problems I believe, but I'm hoping they'll save it and restore it. Thanks for the comments.
Don't American appliances carry water on them as there seems to be no end of videos with US fire agencies having no sense of urgency getting the wet stuff onto the hot stuff. Water out then water in. Pretty basic really. Our trucks have between 2000 and 400 liters of water on board, god for enough time to get water out before getting a standpipe or similar connected.
There was 500 gallons of water in a tank on this rig.
this is not a typical response.. a lot of hesitation and confusion
That fire looks like it was really Shamokin!

They DID tag a hydrant and were hooking it up immediately. It wasn't on my video, but it was on another video of this fire.

A double edge sword for sure, if the fire doesn't destroy the property the water damage can.
For sure!
You've obviously never heard of RECEO. Rescue, Exposures, Containment, Extinguish, Overhaul. Yes the water in the premises may do some damage, but the fire is going to destroy it totally as well as the structures surrounding it.

True hero at work. 😊
Amen!
Definitely a good remedial training experience for this department. Just lucky no one was inside the building.
If there had been a person entrapped in there they would have been beyond rescue from the beginning as the fire was of this magnitude already prior to the FD arrival. As for training I agree. There are more ways to continue to learn from the mistakes we make on the fireground.

That fire is really ShaMokin. LOL I like those 2 older KME engines very nice condition.

Because the paid departments NEVER have a bad day? I beg to differ with you. I watched a Jersey City, NJ 3rd Alarm video where they got ROASTED for issues that make THIS video look like child's play. Just because you get paid to do the job doesn't change the nature of the job. At least it hasn't in the 48 years I've been doing it.
@@FDNY8231you’ve worked on Intervale Ave for 48 years?
appareil photo Thank you for your work, but sorry... just an intervention in the form of a question: Where is the safe distance or starting position for trucks in the event of a fire or explosion?!
Best guess from my years of vast experience. About 1/2 block or more. Do we tend to figure that in when responding in? NO! We always want to be as close as is safe enough to get.
votre appareil photo I thank you very much for this humility and for this answer...but I also have 23 years of experience in the same field. The method of tactical response must be applied after the general history of operations. It begins with identifying the position of the trucks in the intervention for the safety of the interveners and the trucks
I'm glad that in Holland and other European countries engines carry 2,500 to 4,000 Litres of water and 2 pre-attached lines. Gets the wet stuff on the red stuff within a minute while the rest of the crue set up the external water suply from hydrants or a tanker.
Can't argue with that ....
Same here in Australia, depending on the appliance we have between 2000-4000 liters of water for initial attack whilst the pumpie and any spare crew start to get water setup from a stand pipe, hydrant etc. If we don't have water onto a job with 60 seconds of the truck stopping we're having an extremely bad day.
Coolest spot for a LDH INTAKE I’ve ever seen.
I believe it goes right into the tank.

Unfortunately, the "keyboard experts" are everywhere on social media.

THAT AERIAL DID CRAP FOR THE FIRST 5 MINUTES GETTING IT READY FOR A LADDER PIPE WHEN IT COULD HAVE PUT SOMEONE ON THE ROOF RIGHT AWAY TO VENT THE SCUTTLE HATCHES AND/OR BULKHEAD TO RELIEVE THE PENT UP HEAT ON THE FLOORS ABOVE. iT ALSO COULD HAVE PUT SOMEONE ON THE 3RD FLOOR TO DO A PRIMARY SEARCH FOR POSSIBLE VICTIMS. AND TO VENT AS WELL. aS SOON AS THEFOIRST FLOOR WAS KNOCKED DOWN, THAT 2ND LINE SHOULD HAVE GONE UP TO THE 2ND FLOOR IN CASE THERE WAS EXTENSION THROUGH THE CEILING OR IN THE WALLS.
@@K7008B The bulkhead doors for upper floor entry are in the rear (NO entry from the roof) so the ladder to the roof would've done nothing. They opened those doors and vented from the rear. There was NO ONE in the building at the time of the fire. The first floor was business occupied, and after reporting the fire all exited. The 2nd floor was storage. Access WITH handlines was made to the 2nd AND 3rd floors from the rear of the building in case there was extension through the ceilings or in the walls.

Just incase it is not known? These small Appalachian PA cities ALL have Volunteer Fire Depts that really are not like a Union 24-hour staffed one. They do have to go thru training in PA as Union Dept Fire personal. I actually was in one of the Fire Stations as they have BARS in them as Clubs. When this call went out. The Trucks do not go out instantly as some Fire-people need to arrive and suit up. It would appear still this fire had a good start and once got air was fully engulfed. Irony has it it was a closed fire-station turned into a Wine-bar. I think the small city and surrounding township has 6-All volunteer stations left. 5 still have a Bar that is a Club one has to be a member, just not a fireman. I was in the one Fire station that had a Call to go just blocks away. Still though some were in the firehouse and bar at the time. Not sure if it had to wait a bit for more at first to arrive? Other stations from nearby communities and in-city were called also as ALL-Volunteer County-wide and most of Appalachia smaller cities, towns and villages.
